Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED C801bc1f

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED Dacea015

Herbert has been held for us whilst we found a space for him and these are the updates we have been getting on him

Herbert will be going straight into foster with Lynn in Suffolk

he was picked up by a friend of mine tied to a
tree. No one would go near him as he was barking and people said he was
dangerous - thank god my friend knows dogs having 8 of their own, as all the
boy was doing was barking for attention.

He is a mastiff cross of some type, probably approx. 10/ 12 mths old as he is
not the cleverest lad and still very wiggly and silly. He has been fine with
other dogs but a bit head on with his approach but no aggression - just
stupidity.

Has now vaccinated, chipped, castrated and wormed the boy.

I think he was probably locked up indoors, possibly caged as his nails were
extremely long and he was clicking with his nails as he walked over the
kennel floors. He is used to travelling in a car or van and just jumps
straight in, and unbelievably walks fairly ok on a lead, but ask him to sit
and you will be waiting for 5 minutes for his bottom to stop moving.........

We gave him the name of Herbert - coz just one look at him and his wiggle,
along with his silly grinning face just made me think he was a RIGHT
'Erbert........ He has also put on weight as although he was thin he wasn't
extremely thin - just no muscle really.

Since his castration,
he sucked the glue (My vets use glue instead of surface stitches, less
irritation), Just the glue and had to be re-glued and buster collar put on,
which he broke and sucked all the glue away again - so has been stitched and
another buster collar. He thinks the collars are for bashing people and
running head first into walls, doors etc. He again today had his collar
replaced. He is the biggest stupidest dork of a dog I have had the pleasure
of meeting, but he has also been beaten. We thought it may have been the
case but is now confirmed as when for the umpteenth time he has slammed you
into a wall with his collar coz he has again misjudged all distance and you
raise your voice and call him a few expletives - he drops to floor and
wets himself. You say sorry lad but that did hurt and he then gets up and
does the same again....... at which point you learn to quickly grab his
collar and try guiding him instead........ again not easy when he is trying
to turn to see you - bless him...... Brains are just not his forte I am
afraid, but love he has so much. So I think an owner who is very large to
take the knocks but with a very large heart and they'll suit each other fine.
But he is doing fine and now recovering nicely.

he is lovely,
cuddly, very affectionate and sweet but also the most stupid idiotic dog I
have come across for a while, but you can't help forgiving him coz he is
just such a big baby. He is one of those dogs that will flatten you on the
floor by knocking you over and then sit on you, smother you in kisses to
apologise, whilst crushing you under their weight. Even the vets reported
that he cried when he had his pre-med for his op, yet the idiot was fine to
suck on an open wound and also fine for us to glue him back up with out a
murmur. Still I suppose the little brain he did have had been taken by
then.......... poor love.

What foster mum has to say about him

Quote :
He sits well, not bothered about cats, doesn't bother with children, prefers not to be played with by children, he does not react at all, just moves somewhere else.
Likes balls, likes squeaky toys.
Not food aggressive, even high value foods. Doesn't snatch food, will let you touch him whilst eating and will let you touch the food

Thought I would give you all an update on how Herbert (now Lars) is getting on with us.

He coped brilliantly with the four and a half hour journey home... dog in car

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 195899_10150965545091199_351361611_n

He's investigated the garden...and the shed

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 533148_10150969178491199_1220558456_n

He's learning about chickens.. (good boy, he's doing really well for a 'townie', and we still have all 8 chooks)....

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 482081_10150969179121199_1450376044_n

He's settling in....

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 539291_10150969179896199_2925956_n

He and Lexi are getting to know each other...

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 264988_10150969191961199_1843827913_n

And he is settling in with us too....

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 304950_10150969500256199_1781831350_n

So far all is going well - it is early days, but he has stolen our hearts, and Lexi and he are fine with each other (bar the odd little tiff). I've got both of them booked onto a dog training course that starts at the end of September. It's actually a class based on the KC Silver Good Citizen Award, as Lexi already has her bronze, but Rachel the trainer has promised to give Lars easier exercises thumb up

Welcome to our family Lars gold tooth

He's getting on brilliantly with Lexi - they have had the odd discussion but it's all been resolved (relatively) peacefully.

He also loves playing with the water from the hosepipe (just as you said Lynn! rofl ). Lexi's not so convinced! Hopefully this link will work!

Phew - glad the link works! cool

Sharon, we absolutely LOVE him. He's a great lummox and oaf of a dog, but he has the heart and character of an angel.

When he's asleep and snoring he looks (and sounds) like a great big tiger asleep on the carpet! But he is so soft and gentle - he keeps nipping out into the garden and collecting windfall apples for me.... carries them in really carefully, and apart from slobber they are in mint condition!

He's been up to the yard and met the horses - and as usual behaved impeccably.

We've had a few people visit the house, and he's been really good with them too.

I just can't even start to imagine why he ended up dumped and tied to a tree no1 - he's no trouble at all!!!

You say you do not know why he was tied to a tree, I think some people do not realise how lucky they are to have such wonderful dogs in their lives

Hello All,

Apologies for the appalling lack of updates - we've been really busy!!! sorry

Lars has now been with us for about 6 weeks - stopped counting now, it feels like he's always been here, and there would be a HUGE hole if he wasn't with us now!

It's not all been entirely smooth sailing, but we are getting there, and 99% of the time Lars is as good as gold... so, what have we been up to?!

Some lovely walks....

Helpfully bringing required footwear to people....

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 644562_10151001954966199_292235157_n

and of course.... and most importantly.... snuggling!!!!!

Herbert - Mastiff type - HOMED 548773_10151027727606199_1515231470_n

We've also started obedience classes - first one last Sunday. Didn't go too badly but Lars's over enthusiasm when meeting other dogs makes life a little awkward at times. Let's say we are all learning, and all progressing!

Would we ask LBDR to have him back? Hell NO! This guy has his home for life and we are so so grateful that we are priveleged enough to have him here with us XX
